The house is a prime example of 17th-century New England architecture. I grew up across the street from a family who lived in a house from the Colonial era. And like the Witch House, their home was a constant reminder of how different life is today. Narrow staircases and short, sloped ceilings are the obvious features of that bygone time.

The house gained fame through Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel, “The House of the Seven Gables.” Hawthorne was a relative of the Ingersoll family, and his cousin, Susanna Ingersoll, owned the house during his lifetime.
Like the Witch House noted above, this mansion is another gorgeous example of 17th-century New England architecture. In particular, the distinctive gabled roof is something you do not see anymore. While subsequent owners expanded and modified the home over the centuries, much of its original structure remains intact. And that is really cool.
There is one aspect of the house that does suit the Halloween vibe. Visitors and staff have reported various paranormal activities at the museum. While it enhances the legend, what I love about this building is the connection to Hawthorne and New England’s writers and thinkers of the mid 19th century.
